I went to that page, there were some updates for firmware to download manually and a list of windows updates so I installed the latest. It installed ok but hasn't fixed the problem.

What happens if I delete it from device manager? Its not found in Bluetooth but in Com and Serial ports in device manager. It seems has a major upgrade of BT which is presently not compatible with virtual COM ports.
You need to await a fix or as you don't want the COM8 you found try deleting it in Device Manager and repeating the upgrade. My Surface pro 3 is refusing to install the April Windows update because it says the "standard serial microsoft standard serial over bluetooth link driver download Bluetooth link" is not compatible with windows 10 presumably the April 18 version as it is ok on the current and all previous versions of windows I cant see any Bluetooth devices that need one of these drivers- All I have is microsofts type cover, arc mouse,pen, my phone, Bluetooth speakers and a headphone.
I did try an old Bluetooth GPS at one stage but uninstalled it. Cant see anything in device manager that fits this description. A search with Cortana or microsofts assistant is unhelpful. A Bing search fails to reveal what it is for.
Device manager shows this driver is correctly installed under ports, not Bluetooth. it says its COM 8. Its obviously some kind of virtual port as there are no COM or LPT physical ports on a surface pro 3. What is it for, if it is discontinued can I just delete it with out affecting Bluetooth functionality? If I did want to install a serial port device I presume I would use a serial to USB adapter for much faster data transfer rates.
We do have a couple of very expensive older Serial port devices but I have no intention of connecting them to my Surface pro. We gave away the usb adapters as dodgy unreliable, not least because using a long cable to move the device around often resulted in pulling out the USB plug which cant be screwed in like a serial plug can and use "all in ones" on the wall which as business machines do, still have a real serial port.
